FamilyNest is a childcare planning and daily routine application designed to help parents and caregivers coordinate the everyday care of children in one place.
The idea
Managing childcare often involves keeping track of routines, appointments, important contacts, and practical information across different places. FamilyNest brings these things together in a single application, making it easier for caregivers to stay informed and coordinate with each other.
The application is designed primarily for mobile and tablet use, with a focus on keeping everyday interactions simple and accessible.
What I built
I developed FamilyNest as a full-stack application, working from the database and backend logic through to the user interface.
Key features include:
- Daily routines — Track sleep, meals, toilet visits, and notes.
- Calendar & appointments — Manage one-time and recurring appointments.
- Shared households — Support multiple children and allow parents and caregivers to work together.
- Emergency contacts — Keep important contacts easily accessible.
- Resources — Organize useful locations, items, and information.
- Invitations — Allow new parents and caregivers to join a household.
- Multilingual interface — Support for Dutch and French.
- PWA support — Designed to work as an installable application with push notification support.
Technical implementation
The application uses Next.js and TypeScript on the frontend and server, with PostgreSQL and Prisma providing the data layer. Authentication is handled with Better Auth, while React Hook Form and Zod are used to build and validate forms.
The interface is built with Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui, with Intlayer providing the multilingual architecture.
What I focused on
A major focus of the project was keeping the application simple despite the amount of information it needs to manage. I worked on structuring the data, flows, and interface so that common tasks could be completed quickly without unnecessary complexity.
